Never Let Denim Go Un-Bedazzled: How Dolly's Look Changed Over The Years
by: Bob Foster

No matter what you might think about Dolly’s unique style, you have to applaud her for expressing herself with such flamboyance. And even better, she never tries to hide the fact that she loves plastic surgery and has had many different procedures to create her character. She admires plastic surgery for its ability to help you create the appearance you want to have, and has used it for that very purpose. She hasn’t always looked this plastic, however—it’s been a long road.

She has always had a very slim figure and disproportionately large breasts, but she definitely upgraded to a significantly larger size in the mid-eighties. In the 70s, she maintained that they were real, but in 2002 she admitted that she had implants put in after her dramatic weight loss in 1986.

Dolly puts it best when she says, “If I see something sagging, dragging or bagging, I’m going to have it stuffed, tucked or plucked.” In this vein, she has admitted to lots of surgery beyond the implants—including a number of face-lifts, tightening on her neck and rear end, regular collagen injections and chemical peels. She says that she gets the surgeries so her fans will always see her at her best.

She certainly cuts a different figure then the rest of us. As Dolly explains it, “I look just like the girls next door, if you happen to live next door to an amusement park.” In a Vogue interview, she tells us just how different a figure she’s got: “I’m 40-20-36. I used to never tell anybody my measurements, but the older I get the more proud I am.”

Like newcomer Lady Gaga, Dolly wants her look to grab people’s attention long enough for them to see how talented she is. She’s not naive—she knows what it looks like: “I really patterned my look, the country girl’s idea of glamour, after what they call the town tramp… She had this beautiful peroxide hair and had it piled on her head, red nails, high-heeled shoes and I just thought she was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen,” says Dolly.

Dolly has a huge collection of wigs that she has worn since she was 19. Her real hair, extremely fine and light brown, won’t give her the volume she is looking for.

At only five feet tall, Dolly is tiny. But beneath the huge hair and boobs she uses to make herself larger than life, she has the heart and brain of an artist and philanthropist. No matter what her look might make people think, she knows that she is just being herself—something she won’t ever compromise.
