Post Top Five Cat Toys
Top Five Cat Toys
by: Gordon Bloomfield

Cats love to play, especially kittens, studies even show that kittens who play lots have less risk of developing Alzheimer’s in later life. Play is important for cats of all ages as it stimulates their brains and allows an outlet for the need to hone their hunting skills. It also gets rid of excess energy and makes the cat calmer in general, reducing the likeliness of bad behaviour! So what toys do cats love? What are good toys for cats to play with? Here are the top five toys for cats.

Catnip Filled mice

Catnip filled mice are great for cats. Not all cats are affected by catnip, but regardless cats and kittens always love to chase, bite and throw these toys around. They are great for allowing cats to carry out hunting behaviour and will get most kittens running, diving and chasing after them. With a variety of designs, from sparkly to furry catnip filled toys are bound to catch you cats attention.

Ping Pong Balls

Be careful using these if you have other pets, such as dogs, as they could swallow them! Cats love them though, as they bounce and roll most kittens and many older cats will find the movement irresistible. Playing on a hard surface usually yields the best bounce and it’s great to see your pet cat jumping and batting the ball around. Usually they come in bright colours that will catch your felines eye, some even have beads inside which will always spark interest.

Cat wands

A great way to play with your cat. A variety of designs can be found from catfish to jellyfish and mice to butterflies. Cats love to chase the toy as you drag it along or dangle it over chairs and desks. For even more fun you could try moving it randomly over tiled flooring or through a cat tunnel, your cat will likely stalk and pounce, which is great fun for both your pet and you! Some cat wands have suction cups on the end so you can attach them to doors or windows, this is a brilliant way or keeping your young cat occupied if it has to be left indoors for any amount of time.

Cat tunnels

Long tunnels made from cardboard, fabric or plastic, either way many cats have hours of fun dashing through them. Some have crinkle sections that make a fun sound when pounced on or moved through and others have pom poms on string inside. They are great to leave in a room as kittens will spend a while playing in out and around them. Older cats might not find it as fun, so a little encouragement with a catnip filled cat toy or a cat wand will help. Sometimes your cat may decide to use it as a refuge, sleeping or hoarding it’s favourite toys inside!

Cat Bug Jar

An automatic toy that cats love. This clever little toy is an enclosed plastic jar with weighted bottom, so it wobbles and spins when ‘investigated.’ Inside are ‘bugs’ little lightweight cut outs of butterflies that when turned on flutter around with the aid of a enclosed fan. Cats have a fascination for anything flying and fast moving, so this is an all round winner! As they bat the jar back and fourth their curiosity grows, making it a great way to entertain any cat.
