How Not To Ruin Your Attempt To Crate Training Dogs
by: Antonio McRae

Crate training dogs is a technique that helps your dog understand where to go to pee and defecate. Training a puppy takes patience and persistence but it will be worth it in the long run. Keep in mind that crate training dogs takes a little longer than other types of training. Over time dogs trained in this manner will become very secure with going to their crate. Training this way can become an important component of training your puppy. Always take your puppy or dog out to relieve themselves before crating. It is equally important to get your puppy to enter the crate so use something that will encourage them to go in such as a toy or treat.

Always use a crate that is appropriate for the size of your dog when considering this technique. The crate should not be too big but roomy enough that the dog can turn around in it and can accommodate a soft towel and a toy. If the crate is too large the puppy will think that this is just large enough to relieve himself and not get soiled. This is not what you want.. If the puppy objects to being put in the crate give him a few minutes to calm down and then take them out. Always heap lots of praise when they do the right thing. Don't take him out too soon because it only teaches him that being fussy will get him out sooner.

Always make sure your puppy or dog gets plenty of exercise before and after he has been crated for a longer period. Always praise your puppy or dog for good behavior and offer snacks and toys when you put him in his house. If you have to leave your dog for several hours each day your will know he won't get into trouble while you are gone. Dog trainers will recommend crate training dogs because it tends to eliminate many behavioral problems and if done correctly will make your dog very easy to live with.

The best time to start this type of training is when you get your puppy home for the first time. If you don't start right away it will provide opportunities for the puppy to chew on things that you really don't want him chewing. A good breeder will already have introduced the puppy to the crate so it is important for you to continue the training. This gives you a head start on potty training for your puppy. A positive benefit of crate training dogs is that many hotels and airports will require that traveling with your pet. Don't ever punish your dog by putting it in a crate, it should be an enjoyable place for them to be.
