Soccer Stars and Sex Scandal: Being Human or Just Plain Irresponsibility?
by: Henderson Oslo

Move over Tiger Woods. Come on John Terry and then Ashley Cole. English soccer stars have hit the headlines in recent weeks and particularly in a world cup year for perhaps the wrong reasons as lurid and at times despicable revelations have graced media outlets. From a behavioral perspective, this might just be the right time to highlight the huge commitment that comes with being a professional athlete and a celebrity. It creates an appropriate opportunity to explore our psychology since fame has the uncannily peels off disguises that try to hide man's darker nature of deceit. An obvious question therefore is why do we swear to matrimonial fidelity and at the next junction stray?

Are men destined to unfaithful?

There are no easy answers but quite some lessons from medical research. One key reason for marital bonding is the rearing of children, which is expensive and energy sapping in human terms. A child is literally a burden because of the years of physical and cognitive development until late adolescence. Marriage is thought to provide a platform for men and women to work together more effectively as the work is shared. Accepting marital vows is seen as an outward testament to this decision.

Others believe that men enter into matrimonial relationship for reasons other than to raise children. Marriage removes the tendency for continuous struggles with other men for a woman’s attention, which can be expensive. Men infidelity is globally disadvantageous because it reduces the resources one invest in his family and the risk of separation as Cole has found out, albeit though a text message, is a common consequence which effectively destroys all the good intentions or perhaps pretenses that led to the union. Biological responsibilities appear to prompt us towards faithfulness to our obligations, but the desire for adventure and need to exploit “opportunity” are way too huge for some to handle.

Those likely to stray

Sign post are useful for obvious reasons. Some characteristics are associated with infidelity. Men are more likely to commit adultery, which makes them standout and the younger, the more likely. Aiming higher in the age range may be a fair tactics. Personality attributes have been explored as well. Individuals who are self-centered and selfish, as well as those that careless and lack organizational abilities are more likely to stray. Also prone are those who perceive marital satisfaction as poor. Expectedly, the longer the marriage the less likely is the risk of infidelity.

English soccer unfairly stigmatized, again!

In a world cup year, it is unfortunate that English soccer is the platform that had to hoist the frailty of the human spirit and the zeal to hastily, often in minutes of passion, damage the structures that have taken years to build, something as precious as a matrimonial home. More revelations should be expected as the world cup in South Africa draws near, but it is unlikely to dent the foot-balling efforts of the English team on the pitch.

Infidelity is common and often negative biological economics. While some individuals have wrongly become iconized, these dented images are expected to portray the height of professional responsibility and in that stead, they failed woefully. It is human to err, but the amazing nature of the revelations point too obviously to a great deal of irresponsibility.
