Reasons Why Softball Conditioning is Important
by: Marc Dagenais

Compared to basketball, softball is a sport that doesn’t require too much physical strength. As you can observe, in playing softball you don’t need to jump or run all the time during the game. In view of this fact, some softball coaches and players tend to overlook the function of softball conditioning as a part of the players’ training and practices. If not given due attention, there is a probability the team’s performance during an actual game will suffer.

The above statement only put emphasis on the need of softball conditioning. Perhaps, you want to know the reasons why do players should ignore it.

1. It increases endurance – although softball doesn’t require too much physical strength, but when your body is conditioned before stepping in the field, there is the possibility that you can manage to stay long under the sun bearing the heat. And if you don’t easily tire out, you can stay long in the game which can ensures team’s success.

2. It keeps you healthy and prevents injuries – being always healthy without any injury can ensure an extended softball career. Softball conditioning is the key for a healthy body. You can also increase the level of your staying power and immediately recover from fatigue and injuries. You will need to have a well-conditioned body more than ever if you are the most functional member of the team.

3. It gives you the opportunity to steal more bases and creates an explosive hit – when it comes to running and batting skills, speed and acceleration are very significant. If you can make it quickly to the bases after a powerful hit, you are simply increasing the percentage of success of your team. But this can happen if your body is well-conditioned enough to steal bases and explode out of the box.

4. It prepares you for upcoming games – even if you are the most skilled players in your team but when you stop practicing or playing, you’ll get rusty after the off-season. So, to avert such situation from realization, you must carry on with your softball conditioning exercises such as training, practicing and participating in softball drills. If you do this, you won’t find yourself having difficulty adjusting comes the next season.

5. It increases your level of concentration and help reacts faster – there are instances in playing softball where changes in plans have to be executed immediately which require a player to response quickly. If you are in good shape, you can react fast to correspond with the plan. Also, there are times upon reading the situation; you have to make a good decision quick. For instance, should you need to run right after the first pitch or wait for the next one? With proper softball conditioning, you can perform wise.

These are the reasons why softball conditioning is important as a part of softball player’s life. Overlooking its importance, you will definitely end up always reaching your breath during the game. But by incorporating softball conditioning exercises on your regular practice, you can see a big difference in your performance. Take note of this!
