Tips for Ordering Custom Baseball and Softball Trading Pins
by: Douglas Pins

Custom trading pins have been a treasured part of Little League baseball and softball for many years. Every year, parents and coaches new to the game find themselves ordering custom trading pins for the first time. Don’t be intimidated, everyone had to start somewhere. Ordering custom trading pins is really easy, but there are a few tips that can make the process more fun, for both you and your team:

The most important rule when ordering custom trading pins for Little League season is to ORDER EARLY! For most of the year, custom trading pin companies can offer a delivery guarantee of two weeks or less. But when the season cranks up, orders start pouring in, and every trading pin production facility in the world is seriously backlogged by June. At that point, many custom trading pin suppliers suspend their two-week guarantee, just because the factories are too backlogged to produce that fast.

If you order your custom trading pins early, you can relax and not have to worry about whether factory backups or shipping delays will cause your pins to not arrive on time. Waiting too long to order is the most common mistake made by first-timers.

It’s impossible to emphasize this enough. Trading pin season is the busiest time of the year for every custom trading pin factory in the world. It is much less stressful for you and your team to have your custom trading pins early rather than waiting too long and trying to ship them to your hotel the night before the tournament. Don’t know whether your team will make the tournament? Order some pins anyway. That way no matter what, they'll be in your kids’ hands when the trading starts. If you don’t specify the year on the pins, you can use them next year if the team doesn’t make the tourney this year.

Don’t involve too many people in the selection process. If too many people have to approve the design, even those who design their custom trading pins early might have to scramble to get their pins. It’s just not practical to have the design go back and forth to all the players on the team and their parents for each revision. Ideally, one parent and the coach should be able to make the decisions for the custom trading pin design.

When you’re designing your custom trading pins, think big. Bigger trading pins are in high demand at tournaments. Trading pin size is 1.5 inches at a MINIMUM. Most teams will order anywhere from 1.75-inch to 2.5-inch pins. An additional ¼ inch doesn’t seem like much, but it increases the surface area of your custom trading pin up to 25%. When in doubt, bigger is better.

When you’re deciding how many custom trading pins to order, keep this in mind: typically, each player needs about 35 to 50 pins for a good trading pin experience. Remember too that most players will trade with others not in their age bracket, so don’t base the number of pins only on the number of teams you will play. It’s always a good idea to have extra custom trading pins on hand for siblings and friends as well.

Add trading power to your custom trading pins. You want to make sure that everyone at the tournament will want to trade for your custom trading pins. The best way to do that is by adding options such as glitter, danglers, spinners, sliders, bobble heads or blinkers. Your custom trading pins could trade for two (or more) pins with a less desirable design.
