Softball Drills and the Role of a Softball Coach
by: Marc Dagenais

A softball team without a coach is like an airplane without a pilot. Just imagine the role of a softball coach, without him, how can a certain team manage to win? Every time the opening of the next season is approaching, it is always the coach that feels pressured. Yes, the entire team largely depends on the ability of the coach to train his players. If softball drills is said to be the key to win the game, the one holding that key is the coach.

As a coach, you must be knowledgeable enough with this particular sport. You must be equipped with different techniques and strategies to be executed during softball drills. It would not be enough to teach them the basics; you should guide them with demonstrations.

Most softball teams study others team’s techniques and strategies including their weaknesses. You must know this before hand as a coach. Vice versa, you also learn from the different teams. However, you can ensure the team’s victory once you execute new techniques and methods when performing softball drills. Your opponent during actual competitions can’t easily read the moves and techniques your team will be carrying out. This will be your team’s advantage over the other team. In addition, with new strategies, your team will not be left behind.

Since you will not only be helping one player as a coach, your responsibility is understandably not an easy task. But a good coach knows well his players. He must be well aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and also their needs. Therefore, you must know when to give praise and criticisms. Monitor each player’s performance and progress during softball drills. Tell them constructively their weaknesses where there is a need for improvement.

After a couple of days of supervising them and knowing their strengths and weaknesses, you must have an appropriate strategy ready on your pocket so to say. It should be a very suitable method that can unleash each player’s potential abilities. But make sure that it is not boring to employ. An interesting new technique can make the softball drills even livelier.

Since there are lots softball drills available out there, you must only pick those that are relevant for your team. These techniques should further improve their softball skills. You can also use videos to be watched by your team. These should be videos of softball enthusiasts. The good thing about the use of videos is that you no longer have to explain much since they are watched with ideal demonstrations.

As a coach, you must aim for the sky and not for the mountain. Dream BIG and aim BIG. Remember that you are on a sport competition. The weakest teams are the losers. But make sure that your dream or aim should always be backed up with actions through softball drills. These drills should comprise of innovated techniques and strategies. You can be a great coach. You can bring out the best in your team. Yes, be optimistic!
