Outdoor Playsets: 5 Must Haves For Making Your Yard The Coolest Place In Town
by: James Druman

Outdoor playsets can be an awesome addition to the single family home. They provide an attractive reason for your kids to get outdoors and active where you can keep an eye on them, and compared to the sedentary lifestyle of most modern children, that's really more than we can ask for. So here are some ideas for putting together a great backyard playground that can keep your kid and their friends entertained and out of trouble.

1. Swingsets

Relaxing and active at the same time, swings never get old. No mater how far technology comes, something about swinging back and forth just sedates us and puts a smile on our face. You'll probably even find yourself sitting down on it from time to time, so make sure you get a strong enough set.

This can be your traditional bucket or strap-seat swing if you have the money but, if you really don't have the money, you can just throw together your own swing from rope and, optionally, a tire or board.

2. Trampoline

Trampolines are a great source of exercise and can provide fun-filled entertainment for your children for years. The bigger models allow older kids to get really creative and physical, performing stunts that would look at home in a gymnast competition. If that scares you, remember that kids these days are performing wild stunts anywhere they get the chance thanks to modern television and YouTube—just make sure you get a trampoline with the right safety features and teach them some common sense.

3. Pool

What could be better for putting together the ultimate in outdoor playsets than a pool? Before you start thinking that's nothing but a dream at your budget, you should really check out the prices on small above-ground pools these days. You might be very surprised. You don't need an Olympic-sized swimming pool to entertain your children and offer some shelter from the heat.

4. Monkey Bars

Playsets these days come with all kinds of additions to make complete outdoor playgrounds, but I'd like to specifically single out monkey bars. The reason for this is that as long as kids are spending a little time outside, they'll naturally do a lot of running around and working out their legs. But monkey bars offer a chance for working their upper bodies, and the way they are built allows a lot of room for imagination. Also, monkey bar/ swingset combinations generally have a lot of options for added features over time.

5. A Place to Lounge

Finally, I think all playgrounds, even at home, should offer a place to relax. This is nice because then they don't have to track dirt and grass in the house every time they want to eat, and it also begins to function as an outdoor living area, re-establishing the outdoor lifestyle. Include a table so you can serve lunch or drinks out there, some toys, and a radio for music is always nice. Also, make the relaxation area suitable for adults so it can be used for barbecues or just socializing with the children as well.
