The Samsung Galaxy Tab Opens Up A World Of Technology At Your Fingertips
by: Chris Westley

Many will see the Samsung Galaxy Tab as the first major threat to the Apple iPad. The launch of this product will surely be great news for Android fans that are looking for a tablet computer.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is just about as a versatile as this kind of product can be. Featuring every conceivable feature, the manufacturer has packed this 7 inch device with some seriously impressive technology.

Measuring 190x 120 and an extremely slimline 12 mm, this device is also extremely light weight at just 380 g. Given its dimensions and weight, it may be more portable than first meets the eye, as it will easily fit into a handbag. The Samsung Galaxy Tab utilises a 7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen which can display up to 16M colours. The screen utilises a pixel setup of 600x 1024, meaning high definition video can be enjoyed to its full potential. Features of the screen include the TouchWiz UI, multi touch input method which allows pinch to zoom, an accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, touch sensitive controls and Swype text input.

The latter allows users to drag their finger from one key to another on the onscreen QWERTY keyboard without having to take their finger of the screen. With a little practice, this can result in significantly improved text entry speeds.

Either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage is available depending on which model is purchased, however both feature expandable memory thanks to a microSD card slot which can accommodate a memory card of up to 32 GB. Therefore, even the basic model will certainly cater to the needs of just about every user, as this amount of storage is more than capable of storing an entire digital music collection and a large number of video or clips or documents etc.

Utilising GPRS and EDGE, as well as 3G coverage for its initial Internet connection at speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second courtesy of an HSDPA connection (along with HSUPA at 5.76 mega bytes per second), users can enjoy an enhanced browsing experience thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity which takes advantage of local Wireless Networks where available. The device can connect to other hardware devices thanks to both Bluetooth as well as USB connections.

A 3.15 mega pixel digital camera is provided as standard which includes Autofocus and an LED flash as well as the ability to shoot video. A secondary 1.3 mega pixel camera is located on the front of the handset allowing video calls to take place, which essentially also doubles up as a web cam.

Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) is the operating system of choice, and in conjunction with a 1 GHz processor provides the perfect platform for expansion and customisation. Access to the Android Market is provided as standard, which allows users to browse and download thousands of apps from every conceivable category.

With its seemingly infinite levels of customisation, and super impressive spec list as well as its stunning aesthetics, the Samsung Galaxy Tab looks set to sell well and offers a perfect alternative to mainstream tablet computers.
