The HTC Desire HD Is An Appealing All Rounder
by: Chris Westley

Due for release in the final quarter of 2010, the highly anticipated HTC Desire HD, also known as the HTC Ace looks set to cause a stir in the smartphone market, and present a threat to some more established brands.

Building on the success and popularity of the original HTC Desire, this new and improved handset provides a long list of exciting new features. For starters, the handset packs a powerful 8 megapixel HD camera, a whopping 4.3 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, and the latest version of the Android OS (v2.2) known as Froyo.

Due to the large touchscreen, the handset itself is not the smallest in the world; however the large size of the screen makes it an engaging and high quality way to view photos and even HD video. It also makes for easy navigation of the user interface (the highly customisable HTC Sense), which can also be achieved by the use of the built in optical trackpad. The screen features an accelerometer sensor for automatic rotation of the on screen content, so pictures and video can be viewed in portrait and landscape forms.

The HTC Desire HD also provides an impressive user experience when it comes to surfing the web. It utilises both 3G and Wi-Fi connections, the latter providing the fastest option when local wireless networks are available. When they are not, 3G coverage still provides a fast connection thanks to an HSDPA connection at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Bluetooth and micro USB connections allow users to connect the handset to compatible hardware devices whereby a number of tasks can be carried out. The list of connectivity features is rounded off by EDGE and GPRS providing the HTC Desire HD with its connections to cellular networks.

One of the biggest improvements over the original Desire is the digital camera. On the HTC Desire HD, the camera boasts a whopping 8 megapixels. This provides stunningly high quality still images, which even retain their clarity and detail when zoomed in. The camera comes equipped with a comprehensive software package which gives users the ability to edit and improve photos whilst simultaneously simplifying the task of taking them in the first place. Of course, the camera can also shoot video, and this is in 720p HD, meaning the quality of the footage rivals that of the still images.

The HTC Desire HD provides 1.5 GB of internal storage as standard which is generous in itself, however the inclusion of a micro SD card slot allows user to expand the storage by up to 32 GB, depending on which memory card is installed. This means the handset is capable of storing a large number of files right out of the box, as 1.5 GB is more than capable of storing an average sized music collection, or a large number of photos.

The versatility and functionality of the Android OS combined with a powerful 1 GHz processor provides an ideal platform for customisation and expansion. Access to the Android Market means users can browse and download thousands of apps.

With the HTC Desire HD providing both powerful hardware and software, the sky really is the limit.
